The WPI men’s varsity eight finished second by a second twice this weekend but won the Baker Cup against Tufts. On Sat, Trinity edged out WPI in a time of 6:04 to 6:05 with Ithaca and Colby finishing third and fourth in 6:10.45 and 6:10.62. UNH was fifth in 6:37. The Bantams took the lead right from the start and WPI kept challenging them down the course but Trin had an answer each time. It was a great race! the crews were never separated by more than two seats. Trin’s M2V beat WPI by .2 seconds with Colby, Ithaca and UNH rounding out the field. The WPI V4 beat Trin, Conn and Colby and the WPI M3V8 defeated Ithaca.
At the varsity level, the top five or six crews all seem to be within a second of each other which will make New England’s very interesting.
On the women’s side, WPI’s WV8 was second to Ithaca but beat UNH, William Smith, Trinity, Colby, Conn College and Clark. The W2V8 won their event as did the W3V8. The W4V8 lost to Ithaca.
Today, Sunday, the men’s and women’s V8’s won the Baker and Brown Cups vs Tufts. Unfortunately, URI finished first in the race by 1 second in a time of 601 but they were a guest entry. Skidmore finished fourth. The women also beat William Smith and Skidmore. the winning time was 6:42 with Tufts a second and a half behind.
The men’s and women’s 2Vs won close races and the M3V and MV4 also won their races as did the W4V. The W3V8 was a close second to Tufts.
