Hello Everyone,
Homecoming was a lot of fun this year. On Friday night, we inducted Dave Ploss into the WPI Athletic Hall of Fame and on Saturday we had a great turn out for the alumni race! I believe we had everyone from the class of ’17 as well as a lot of people from the late 70s (good turnout from the ‘79 Men’s New England Championship boat) and early 80s, many who came back to honor Dave, their coach. And other years were well represented as well. There was also a strong turnout on the women’s side to celebrate the 40th anniversary of women’s athletics at WPI. We unveiled a banner in honor of the last year’s New England Championship by the MV8 and christened two eights: The “Nancy E. Wood Popinchalk” for the women’s crew and The “Henley “81”for the men. Nancy was an original member of the women’s crew and instrumental in building that program and the “’81”, donated by Peter Clapp’s family trust, was named in honor of the first WPI men’s four to go to Henley in 1981 of which Peter was a member.
It was particularly fun to have representatives from most of the 50+ years of WPI crew! And we have some important anniversaries coming up: the 50th of the 1968 NERC Championship and the 40th of the 1979 Championship crew.
First race is the Textile on Oct 1 and we have two women’s collegiate eights as well as a men’s collegiate eight and a men’s club eight at the Charles. The men will also have an alumni eight.
See you at the races!
Larry
